If you’ve injured your foot or ankle and been told you need a moon boot, you probably have questions. What exactly is a moon boot? Do you need a referral? Can you get one fitted today? This guide answers all your key questions and shows how WA Health Group can help you recover faster, with expert care and on-site fittings at our Murdoch and Canning Vale clinics.
What is a Moon Boot, and when is it used?
A moon boot (also called a CAM walker) is a medical-grade boot that stabilises and supports the foot or ankle after an injury. It’s commonly used for:
-
Stress fractures
-
Severe sprains
-
Ligament or tendon injuries
-
Post-surgical recovery
-
Plantar fasciitis or Achilles issues (in some cases)
Unlike a rigid cast, moon boots are removable and adjustable, allowing you to shower, sleep more comfortably, and begin rehab earlier.
Do I need a referral to get a Moon Boot?
No referral is needed to be assessed and fitted for a moon boot at WA Health Group. You can book directly with one of our physiotherapists or podiatrists.
We’ll assess your injury, determine if a moon boot is necessary, and fit it on the same day. If needed, we’ll also communicate with your GP or specialist for imaging or shared care.
Can I get a Moon Boot fitted on the same day?
Yes. We stock a full range of moon boots (all sizes and styles) at both our Murdoch and Canning Vale clinics. Whether you need a short boot, high boot, or additional ankle support, we’ll fit what’s appropriate for your injury and ensure it’s done correctly.
Walk-ins are welcome for urgent cases, but we recommend calling ahead or booking online and noting your case is urgent, we’ll do everything we can to prioritise you.
Will I need a Rehab plan after I get the Moon Boot?
Yes, and that’s where we go beyond just providing the boot.
Our Sports Physios and Podiatrists will:
-
Guide you on when and how long to wear the boot
-
Provide a tailored rehab plan to maintain strength and mobility
-
Offer clear return-to-activity timelines
-
Help you transition out of the boot safely
-
Support you with follow-up care, including taping, exercise therapy, or orthotics if needed
Wearing a moon boot is just one part of recovery. The rehab journey is where long-term results happen.
